Hartville is proud to be part of the Fry's Lyon Foundation Missouri Civil War Passport Program and their efforts to bring interest and education to historic Civil War sites.
On the foundation's website for the program (https://mo-passport.org/), it outlines why it is launching this program: "We are working to keep the history alive for the enjoyment of future generations; in the case of Civil War site, so the sacrifices of those who suffered through that war can be memorialized. Hopefully, the interest demonstrated by passport participants will encourage site managers to apply for federal funds for the preservation and improvement of sites for the benefit of future generations."
"Currently, there is no statewide organized effort to preserve Missouri Civil War heritage, arguably the most interesting of all the states; and a case can be made for the fact that Missouri suffered more from that war than any other state," the website notes. "Even so, that history has almost been forgotten and many do not even realize that Missouri played a major role in the Civil War."
Hartville's stamp can be found at The Hardware Store just around the corner from Steel Memorial Cemetary.
Passport books will also be available at this site.
